dryer is one of the most common household appliances and it makes life easy by drying our clothes in a quick and efficient way.  However, if your dryer is not maintained, it can be the most hazardous item in your home.   Although the statistics may vary, the results are the same.  Dryer fires are the cause of thousands of house fires each year.

In 2012, the NFPA released a report that stated  in 2010, in the U. S., 16,800 confirmed and non-confirmed home structure fires were due to dryer fires and/or a combination of washing machine/dryer fires. These fires resulted in 51 civilian deaths. 380 civilian injuries with over 236 million dollars in property damage. This does not include any of the non-replaceable personal items that were lost. The report does not state how many family pets were lost during these incidents nor did the report take into account any injuries or death to any of the first responders. Unfortunately, due to the dangerous aspects of the job, one could conclude that there were at least some injuries to first responders. The video below really says it all and how quick your life could change.

Other than lint, this is the most common reason that dryer vents get clogged. This picture illustrates several different problems.

Starting with the obvious is the bird's nest itself. This bird's nest was about two feet long and was packed in this vent very tight. The birds use dryer vents because they are a good spot to incubate eggs especially during the cool spring nights.

Here is how birds build their nest in a dryer vent. First, they use the existing dryer lint to secure the items they use to build the nest. Once started, they pack the back of the nest as tight as possible to allow some hot air from the dryer through but not all of the hot air because it would be detrimental to their eggs. Then, they make an extended nest adding more insulation to block the hot air exhaust from the dryer

In this case, the dryer vent was not properly capped with an exhaust cover to prevent the birds from getting in the vent. Last, this dryer vent was approximately fifteen feet above grade or ground level, making it hard for the home owner to inspect and clean the dryer vent. This photo from the birds eye view, no pun intended, was a perfect nesting area.

The home owner noticed their clothes were not dry and that the drying cycle was taking longer and longer. They called Sho Me Duct Cleaners to inspect their dryer vent. While investigating their dryer vent, this is what we found. This could have ended up in disaster had this situation been ignored. Annually, over 16,000 dryer vent fires happen tragically leaving some home owners with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

This picture was taken standing on the floor looking up. This is by far the worst way to vent your dryer!  However, most condos in the Branson, Missouri/ Hollister, Missouri area are vented in a similar fashion.

The problem is that dryers do not have enough hot air exhaust power to lift wet lint to the heights and the distances that most condo designs employ. This lack of crucial consideration in the designing of the condo buildings leave condo owners exposed to the dangers of dryer lint fires. Cleaning your dryer vents on a regular basis will help prevent this problem. In a condo association setting, you need to make sure your fellow owners clean their dryer vents on a regular basis.
